Lander to Boulder

Wyoming
A difficut but beautiful ride into and around the stunning Wind River Mountains. This route has more pavement than is desirable, but the views are worth it.

The ride begins with a 4,000 foot climb through Sinks Canyon on Louis Lake Road, up several switchbacks to its high point of 9500 feet at Blue Ridge. From there it descends to Highway 28. After a few miles you will turn back onto gravel for a short trip through South Pass City, a gold boom town founded in the 1860s that still exists today.

After another stint on the highway, you'll turn north on the Lander Cutoff road, which takes you through the high desert country along the western flank of the southern Winds.

Camping

On Louis Lake Road, once you pass into the National Forest you can camp anywhere, unless otherwise posted. There are several campgrounds along this road as well.

The gravel roads near South Pass City and the Lander Cutoff road are all BLM land and you can camp anywhere along there was well.

Water

Plenty of water is available along Louis Lake road: streams, lakes, campground spigots. You can get water in South Pass City, at a rest area along Highway 28 and you'll pass two rivers on the Lander Cutoff road.

Food

In Atlantic City there's a restaurant, but the roundtrip will add nearly 1000 feet of climbing - not worth it!
